A Legacy of Taste

The story of Los Olivos Tasting Room & Wine Shop

Before Los Olivos became a must-visit destination for wine lovers and weekenders, a simple, game-changing idea took root. In 1987, Bill Benzinger – one of the original partners in Qupé Winery – dreamed up something new: an independent tasting room that would pour and sell wines from the region’s most talented small producers, especially those without tasting rooms of their own.

He opened shop in the town’s original general store, built in 1887, and filled it with now-legendary labels like Au Bon Climat, Ojai, Hitching Post, and Lane Tanner. These were wines crafted with care and intention, often behind the scenes, and Bill believed they deserved to be tasted. Word spread quickly – Los Olivos Tasting Room became a cherished gathering spot, known for its charm, its access to rare wines, and the warm welcome inside.

In 1993, Bill passed the reins to his son Chris Benzinger, who carried the torch for over three decades. Under his care, the shop grew into a trusted source for wine discovery and community – offering curated tastings, hosting passionate conversations, and championing the best of Santa Barbara County and beyond.

Today, the story continues with Mike Arme, a longtime wine lover who split his time between San Diego and Santa Ynez before making Los Olivos his forever home. When Chris began thinking about retirement, he wanted someone who would protect the spirit of what he’d built. Mike was that person.

“I’m so proud to carry on the legacy of this incredible place—not just a tasting room, but a space for discovery, great conversation, and consumable art.”
Mike Arme, Owner & Wine Lover

Now, with new energy and a deep respect for tradition, Mike is shaping the next chapter of LOTR. Whether you stop in for a spontaneous pour or book a group tasting with friends, we hope you’ll feel the heart and history in every sip.
